Regional Anesthesia & Pain Medicine (RAPM), the official journal of ASRA, has named Yun Guan, PhD, MD, to the newly created position of executive editor for basic science.

Dr. Guan is a professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine and neurological surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD. He also serves as director of Pain Research Core and director of Pain Neuromodulation Research within the Neurosurgery Pain Research Institute. He has participated in a number of research studies related to the care of patients suffering from chronic pain. 

Dr. Guan obtained his medical degree from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College in Beijing. He earned his PhD in neuroscience from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore before coming to Johns Hopkins University for his fellowship in anesthesiology and critical care medicine. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed research articles, review articles, and book chapters. The long-term goal of his multidisciplinary research is to understand the neuronal mechanisms of and develop better strategies for treatment of chronic pain. His research encompasses electrophysiological, molecular biological, imaging, immunocytochemical, and behavioral pharmacological approaches. 

The new executive editor position was created to expand the journal's basic science footprint and translational research publications. Dr. Guan joins a prestigious editorial board of regional anesthesia and pain medicine experts under the oversight of Editor-in-Chief Brian Sites, MD. RAPM is the third highest-cited anesthesiology journal. It is published monthly by BMJ
