ASRA Opposes VA Supremacy Project to Develop National Standards of Practice
ASRA is one of 97 professional medical societies that have signed on to a letter to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VAs) opposing its Federal Supremacy Project that would develop national practice standards for 48 healthcare occupations. As the name implies, the VA is invoking the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution of the United States to preempt state and local scope of practice laws as it develops national standards of practice that could enable nurses, physician assistants, and other non-physicians to provide services and perform procedures that are outside the scope of their knowledge and licensure. The letter also calls into question the feasibility of developing a single national standard of practice for all VA-employed physicians.
