Application Deadline: AMA Current Procedural Terminology Advisor

ASRA Pain Medicine is seeking a volunteer to serve as our alternate advisor to the AMA Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Committee. The CPT Committee is comprised of physicians representing the national medical specialty societies who advise the CPT Editorial Panel on matters concerning coding and nomenclature, and advocate for fair reimbursement on physician work and practice expense values to be assigned to new or revised CPT codes. Accurate and complete CPT codes are critical to payment for regional anesthesia and pain medicine. Qualified volunteers will have a thorough understanding of CPT coding and a passion for supporting the continuum of pain medicine.

THE ROLE OF THE CPT ADVISOR

The American Medical Association (AMA) convenes meetings of the CPT Editorial Panel three times a year to revise existing codes and develop new codes for all medical procedures. The ASRA Pain Medicine’s CPT advisor and alternate advisor will work in partnership with ASRA Pain Medicine staff to support our field in the following ways as necessary:

  • Recommend revisions to existing acute and chronic pain-related CPT codes;
  • Develop and present proposals for new acute and chronic pain related CPT codes;
  • Comment on proposals submitted by other specialty societies that may impact pain medicine;
  • Work under the direction of the ASRA Pain Medicine Board of Directors and in conjunction with ASRA Pain Medicine staff to represent our members at CPT Editorial Panel meetings; and
  • Review materials, including CPT code change applications and supporting literature, in a timely fashion.
  • Show willingness and flexibility to travel—the CPT panel meets three times yearly, usually in the months of February, May and September.

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

Qualified volunteers will have experience with the CPT code set, which may have been obtained through previous committee involvement, course attendance, and/or as a part of medical practice. Commitment to pain medicine, documented by a minimum of five years of ASRA Pain Medicine membership, is also required.

TIME COMMITMENT

Meetings typically last three days, from Thursday – Saturday. The meetings are held throughout the country and locations vary. Qualified volunteers will express the ability to prepare in advance and attend all three meetings each year.

Members interested in volunteering should send a copy of their CV as well as a completed Conflict of Interest form by July 31, 2024, to asraassistant@asra.com.
