Target Audience:

This activity is designed for anesthesiologists, CRNAs, anesthesiologist assistants, and trainees who perform peripheral nerve blocks and manage perioperative analgesia, as well as advanced practice practitioners and surgeons managing patients receiving regional anesthesia.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define rebound pain.
  • Identify patient, surgical, and anesthetic risk factors for developing rebound pain.
  • Summarize up-to-date strategies to prevent or reduce the risk of developing rebound pain.
  • Select and implement evidence-based strategies to reduce the incidence and intensity of rebound pain through multimodal analgesia, patient education, and optimization of anesthetic technique.
  • Develop a management plan for patients experiencing rebound pain, including early recognition, rescue analgesia, and criteria for ruling out complications or block failure.
