Prospective Fellowship Candidates,
Welcome to UNC Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine. At UNC we believe it is our responsibility to train fellows who will move the specialty forward, and we make this our priority.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) offers a one-year fellowship in regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine. Dating back to 2006, the program has trained leaders in the subspecialty for almost 20 years. The regional anesthesia faculty deliver world-class care in acute pain management. UNC is considered the flagship hospital system in the state, which provides fellows the opportunity to deliver excellent patient care to the community, while learning from a diverse group of experts in regional anesthesia. The program offers its fellows the perfect combination of forward thinking, networking, and career growth. Fellows will be fully credentialed as a board-eligible or board-certified anesthesiologist, and they spend approximately 50% of their time performing cases as a staff anesthesiologist and at the academic rank of Clinical Instructor.

UNC currently offers three fellowship positions per year. Highlights of the program are as follows:

  • 3000 blocks per year in a tertiary academic setting, offering inpatient hospital care and ambulatory surgical center experience.
  • OSCE and Oral Board Examination training. The department boasts almost 10 active ABA examiners and board question writers, along with two retired examiners who are still in active practice in the department.
  • Paid membership with the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and attendance at the ASRA spring meeting.
  • Direct connection to the annual World Day of Regional Anesthesia Conference. Organized by UNC regional faculty yearly.
  • Multiple regional faculty in leadership with the American Society of Regional Anesthesia (ASRA). UNC representation on the executive board, faculty speakers, faculty development committee members, and head organizers for the quarterly ASRA journal club.
  • Multiple regional faculty recognized annually for the department’s resident teaching honor roll.
  • A fellowship cadaver course allowing national collaboration with other fellowship programs. Additionally, an ASRA Cadaver Course is hosted by UNC. Made possible by a state of the art lab housed in UNC’s Roper Hall.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is an equal opportunity employer that welcomes all to apply, including protected veterans and individuals with disabilities.
