Hospital for Special Surgery*
Clinical Experience:
Over 55,000 anesthetic procedures are performed annually in our operating rooms with more than 90% employing regional anesthesia techniques including: upper and lower extremity plexus and nerve blocks, central neuraxial blocks, perineural catheter techniques, nerve stimulator localization techniques, and ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve blocks. Over 17,000 patients are seen annually by our Acute Pain Service Team with postoperative pain management interventions that include intravenous, neuraxial and peripheral techniques, perineural catheter and alternative therapies.
This Fellowship includes a 4 week rotation at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center where Fellows perform thoracic epidurals, transverse abdominis plane blocks, paravertebral blocks, pectoralis nerve blocks, catheters, and other techniques, in both an in-patient hospital, and an ambulatory care center.
This Fellowship also includes ongoing experience in two off-site Ambulatory Surgery Centers (“Block Room” model).
Education Initiatives:
The Department offers a comprehensive, CME-accredited academic program featuring Grand Rounds lectures from international experts in Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine, as well as Department Faculty, literature reviews, research forums, interdisciplinary conferences, a 20-session comprehensive Oral Board Examination Preparation Program, a Core Curriculum Lecture Series (August) and monthly Dinner & Didactic series. Fellows participate in a monthly formalized Faculty-led Cadaver Lab Curriculum and a 6 part Crisis Resource Management Lecture and Simulation course at the Cornell Skills Acquisition and Innovation Lab (SAIL).
Fellows participate in FATE (Focused Assessment with Transthoracic Echocardiography) and FAST (Focused Assessment Sonography in Trauma) training, becoming certified in techniques used to evaluate and manage patients during critical events. This training supports enrollment in the ABA Diagnostic POCUS Certificate pathway, and fellows are provided dedicated time, supervision, and support to complete the required scans and achieve certification prior to graduation.
Elective Opportunities:
Fellows are encouraged to select one of three academic tracks: Medical education, QA/Informatics and Clinical Outcomes, or Clinician Scientist. These academic tracks are mentor-led and provide integral foundational knowledge for our fellows as they develop their post-fellowship career. Fellows are also encouraged to participate in national and international conferences, seminars, and seek additional certifications and training that align with their academic track.
Fellows have 1 dedicated Academic Day each week (no clinical assignments) which they can use to work on their scholarly activity.
