Columbia University/NYPH Medical Center Columbia University*

The Division of Regional Anesthesiology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center offers a one-year ACGME-accredited Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine Fellowship which is committed to providing outstanding and compassionate clinical care, education, and scholarship. The fellowship program's mission is to train the next generation of perioperative pain physicians who will be outstanding clinicians and will continue to serve as future innovators, educators and leaders in the field. Our educational mission is to train anesthesiologists to serve as consultants in regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine (RAAPM) by being skilled in patient assessment and management.

Our clinical population is diverse and medically complex.  Fellows receive exposure to a variety of techniques for orthopedic, vascular, breast, abdominal, gynecologic, thoracic and cardiac surgery.  Currently our institution performs 3700 peripheral nerve blocks and 200 peripheral nerve catheters annually with anticipated continued growth.

Fellows spend 80% of their time in the clinical arena with the remainder being protected research, education and administrative time.  The majority of clinical time is spent in a dedicated 6-bed monitored holding area performing and teaching regional anesthesia techniques to the anesthesia residents and medical students. Our fellows become skilled educators and are given didactics and feedback to codify their teaching skills.  Fellows are expected to participate in research, quality improvement projects, educational initiatives as well as actively contribute in a monthly regional anesthesia journal club. Fellows teach medical students in the anatomy lab and participate in cadaveric dissections. Fellows also have the opportunity to participate and receive certification in basic and advanced FATE (Focus Assessed Transthoracic Echocardiography) courses sponsored by the Columbia Department of Anesthesiology. We also offer multidisciplinary workshops for personal and professional development for our fellows.

Fellows have no attending responsibilities. There are voluntary moonlighting opportunities if desired.
