For the final Membership Spotlight installment of 2024, ASRA Pain Medicine showcases Enrique Goytizolo, MD, nominated by Mary Hargett. At Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), Dr. Goytizolo served as assistant clinical director from 2021-2024 and has also been the attending director of the nurse anesthetist team since 2021.

"Dr. Goytizolo’s enthusiasm for teaching is infectious,” Ms. Hargett describes before continuing, “he is an avid student himself, also interested in learning new techniques.” As a testament to his passion for teaching, Ms. Hargett states, “Dr. Goytizolo has served as the director of our Academic Observership Program since its creation and has hosted and taught hundreds of national and international physicians who were eager to learn more about our practice. Dr. Goytizolo is also the director of the HSS Orthopedic Knowledge Exchange Program in Anesthesia in which trainees from Latin America come to HSS for three weeks to learn more about regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine.”

In 1985, Dr. Goytizolo received his medical degree from the Federal School of Medical Science in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Dr. Goytizolo completed an anesthesiology residency at Cornell-NYP, followed by a regional anesthesia fellowship at HSS.

Dr. Goytizolo’s past institutional responsibilities include serving on the planning committee for the Controversial and Fundamentals in Regional Anesthesia Symposium from 2010-2012 and participating on the Education Committee from 2006-2022.

Notably, Dr. Goytizolo won the Teacher of the Year Award in 2006, 2010, and 2016, chosen by the graduating regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine fellows at HSS. He is a member of ASRA Pain Medicine, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and the International Anesthesia Research Society, and has presented at several international society conferences. He also serves as a reviewer for Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, and as a reviewer and editorial board member for the Brazilian Journal of Anesthesia.
