“Dr. Machi has made a number of impressive contributions to ASRA Pain Medicine,” said nominator David Provenzano, MD, president of the Society. “Like the organization, he represents the entire spectrum of pain as he performs both regional anesthesia and pain medicine.”

A member since 2012, Dr. Machi was appointed to the Newsletter Committee in 2019 and has served as the special projects associate editor since 2021. He is currently an Ad-Hoc editor to the committee. A frequent contributor in addition to editor, he developed the “Literature Review” feature, which provides updates on recently published papers, and he frequently profiles leaders and award winners. Dr. Machi also served as faculty for the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) annual meeting in 2021 and has been a frequent presenter at both ASRA Pain Medicine and ASA meetings. He enjoys serving as an ASRA Pain Medicine mentor.

Dr. Machi was born in Milwaukee, WI, and attended Tulane University in New Orleans, LA, for his bachelor of arts degrees in history and Italian. He earned his MD from University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison and went on to complete an internship in transitional medicine at St. Joseph Hospital Wheaton-Franciscan Healthcare in Milwaukee, WI. He completed his residency in anesthesiology and his fellowship in regional anesthesiology at the University of California San Diego. He then entered private practice in the San Francisco Bay Area before entering academic practice at UTSW in 2015.

Committed to teaching and supporting residents and fellows, Dr. Machi started the regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine fellowship at his institution in 2016, served as program director, and steered the program to achieve ACGME accreditation in 2020. More recently, he received the Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine Faculty of the Year Award from his institution in 2022. He has also served as the acute pain section editor for Anesthesia Toolbox.
