A doctor of osteopathic medicine, Dr. Byrne attended Michigan State University College in East Lansing for her degree. She earned her master’s degree in public health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After completing her residency in anesthesiology at the University of Michigan, she worked in private practice in Virginia before returning back to her home in Michigan to complete a fellowship in regional and ambulatory anesthesia. 

With interests in residency curriculum development, point-of care-ultrasound (POCUS), and focused assessed transthoracic echocardiography, she was recently named associate program director of the Core Anesthesiology Residence Program and is the director of resident scheduling as well as director of POCUS Education. Nominator Dr. Nabil Elkassabany enthusiastically recommended Dr. Byrne to be highlighted in the member spotlight, noting her service as a consistent faculty member for the ASRA Pain Medicine annual meetings and stand-alone Introduction to Perioperative Point-of-Care Ultrasound courses. 

Dr. Byrne is also the director of regional anesthesia education at East Ann Arbor Surgery Center, coordinator for the CA-3 tutorial series, an evaluator for the objective structure clinical examination, and a member of the Medical School's Academy of Medical Educators. She actively participates in the department of anesthesiology's Program Evaluation and Executive Education committees. She interviews and select candidates for the Anesthesiology Residency Program and the Regional and Ambulatory Anesthesia Fellowship. Her research endeavors are centered around education, and her academic interests include root cause analyses, resident education, clinical POCUS, regional anesthesia, and practice management. 

She has participated in many ASRA Pain Medicine initiatives, including leading a team that updated the regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine guidelines for training. She is also a member of the Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia and the Society for Education in Anesthesia.
