Dr. Ki-Jinn ChinKi Jinn Chin, MBBS (Hons), MMed, FANZCA, FRCPC, will receive the Presidential Scholar Award. Dr. Chin is a professor of anesthesia at the University of Toronto, Canada, and a staff anesthesiologist in the department of anesthesiology and pain management at Toronto Western Hospital.

The Presidential Scholar Award recognizes outstanding scientific and sustained contributions to regional anesthesia, acute or chronic pain medicine over the preceding 15 years. Dr. Chin will receive the honor during the 47th Annual Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine meeting to be held March 31-April 2, 2022, in Las Vegas.

“Scientific discovery is very much a team effort, and this award is really a reflection of the intellectual sharing and generous exchange of ideas that underpins all advances in knowledge." - Dr. Ki Jinn Chin

One of Dr. Chin’s principal areas of research is the use of erector spinae plane and other fascial plane blocks for local anesthesia. The technique involves ultrasound-guided injection of local anesthetic into a tissue plane where nerves travel, rather than injecting anesthetic into the nerves themselves.

Dr. Chin said the ASRA Pain Medicine award came as a surprise because “I have never thought of myself as a researcher in the pure sense of the word, and certainly not in the league of previous award winners. It is thus truly a deep and unexpected honor to be recognized by ASRA in this way.”

He credited the mentorship and support of colleagues at Toronto Western Hospital, where he said he began his “path of intellectual exploration.” Dr. Chin also cited his collaborations with trainees and colleagues around the world.

“Scientific discovery is very much a team effort, and this award is really a reflection of the intellectual sharing and generous exchange of ideas that underpins all advances in knowledge,” he said.

Dr. Chin also serves as Toronto Western Hospital’s fellowship coordinator and director of its Regional Anesthesia Fellowship Program.

In 2007 and 2008, respectively, Dr. Chin completed post-graduate fellowships in neuroanesthesia at Western University’s Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine, London, Canada, and in regional anesthesia at Toronto Western Hospital, University of Toronto.

He earned a bachelor's of medicine and surgery (MBBS) with honors in 1996 from the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, United Kingdom, and a master's of medicine (MMed) in anesthesiology from the National University of Singapore in 2004.

A prolific writer, Dr. Chin has published 70 peer-reviewed articles in medical journals, and he has won numerous awards for his publications, including: Top 10 Peer Reviewer for 2020 (2nd place), Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine journal, and 2019 Top 10 Articles of the Year (7th place), Anaesthesia journal, Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland, United Kingdom.

He is a consultant reviewer for seven medical journals and associate editor of ASRA Pain Medicine's Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine journal. In addition, Dr. Chin is active in several organizations, including serving as the chair, vice-chair and workshop chair of ASRA Pain Medicine's Scientific Program Committee during multiple years.
