The American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA Pain Medicine) 2023 Resident/Fellow of the Year will be awarded to Adlai Pappy, MD, MBA, chief resident in the anesthesiology residency program at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, MA, and will begin a pain fellowship there this summer.

Under the mentorship of Dr. Vinita Singh, Dr. Pappy is currently investigating the effects of opioids in modulating the efficacy of immunotherapy in patients with cancer. He received funding for the project from the ASRA Pain Medicine Graduate Student Research Grant in 2019.

Dr. Pappy also serves as the co-director of the anesthesiology residency recruiting program at Brigham and Women's Hospital and, during his tenure, he helped to achieve the most diverse residency class in the history of the program in 2020. He serves on the ASRA Pain Medicine Resident Section Committee as the Membership Subcommittee co-chair and led the development of educational materials for upper extremity blocks. He has a number of peer-reviewed publications and presentations.

"I first became involved [in ASRA Pain Medicine] when Emory and Brigham supported my attendance at spring ASRA during my M4 year. I was immediately struck by the high level of expertise and knowledge shared by the presenters and the kindness of the faculty present," Dr. Pappy said, adding that "ASRA Pain Medicine has been an invaluable resource for me to learn from and with leaders in our field."

"I hope to advocate for not only patients but also the next generation of providers to reduce barriers in access to care." - Adlai Pappy, MD, MBA

"I was absolutely thrilled to learn that I was going to receive this award," Dr. Pappy said. "It's always an honor to be recognized for your work, but to receive an award from an organization as respected as ASRA Pain Medicine is truly humbling. I can think of several colleagues I have worked with at my residency and at ASRA Pain Medicine who would be well deserving of this award, so it is truly humbling to be recognized."

Dr. Pappy earned his MD and his MBA from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA. He earned his undergraduate at Princeton University. He has been an active volunteer in alumni activities at both Princeton and Emory universities.

"Medicine is seeing an ever-increasing number of challenges to providing high-quality care, and I hope to advocate for not only patients but also the next generation of providers to reduce barriers in access to care," Pappy concluded.

The Resident/Fellow of the Year Award is given annually to a resident or fellow member of ASRA Pain Medicine who has demonstrated outstanding contributions to regional anesthesia or pain medicine; has contributed to the advancement of the profession, welfare of residents, or quality of residency education; serves as a role model and mentor to his or her peers; and embodies the values of ASRA Pain Medicine.
